Deep Sea Anglerfish and Their Nightmare Romance

With a bioluminescent lure dangling from her head and a male attached to her underbelly, the female deep sea anglerfish is a fascinating specimen. A fixture on lists of the scariest fish in the ocean, they are truly the stuff of nightmares.

There is still a great deal of mystery surrounding the eerie creatures as they are rarely observed in the wild. In fact, this is the first time footage has been captured of a mating pair.

There are over 160 species of anglerfish. Known as Caulophryne jordani, or the fanfin angler, this particular angler is unusual for the filaments which extend from its fins. It is the first time what may be bioluminescence on its long whisker-like appendages has been documented.
